Compounds having the formula FORM:0891600/IV (b)/1 in which R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having not more than 6 carbon atoms, R11 is an alkyl radical having not more than 6 carbon atoms, one of the substituents R and R111 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having not more than 6 carbon atoms and the other is a fatty radical having 8-24 carbon atoms, X is an anion of an organic acid, e.g. lactic acid, and n is an integer from 2 to 4, are prepared by reacting equimolecular amounts of a mercaptan having the general formula HS-CH R1-CO2R1 in which R1 is an alkyl radical having not more than 6 carbon atoms and of an alkylene diamine having the formula FORM:0891600/IV (b)/2 in which R, R1, R11, R111 and n have the meaning assigned to them above, and treating the product with an organic acid.ALSO:A process for setting hair without submitting it to a previous permanent waving comprises impregnating the hair with an aqueous solution of a compound having the formula FORM:0891600/IV (c)/1 in which R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having not more than 6 carbon atoms, R11 is an alkyl radical having not more than 6 carbon atoms, one of the substituents R and R111 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having not more than 6 carbon atoms and the other is a fatty radical having 8-24 carbon atoms, X is an anion of an organic acid, e.g. lactic acid, and n is an integer from 2 to 4, rinsing the hair, setting it to a desired configuration and then subjecting it to air-drying.
