The invention comprises crystalline pantothenic acid methyl ester and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting pantolactone with b -alanine-menthyl ester. Alternative processes comprise (a) reacting pantolactone with ammonia and then acrylic acid menthyl ester, (b) converting pantolactone into pantothenic acid in known manner, converting the latter into any desired mixed anhydride by reacting a salt of pantothenic acid with an acyl halide and converting this anhydride into the pantothenic acid menthyl ester with menthol, (c) reacting pantolactone with a simple b -alanine ester to form the corresponding pantothenic acid ester and converting the ester, by reaction with menthol, with the liberation of the corresponding simple alcohol, into the pantothenic acid menthyl ester. Illustrative products of the invention are d-pantothenic acid-l-menthyl ester, dl-pantothenic aciddl-menthyl ester, dl-pantothenic acid-l-menthylester, d-pantothenic acid-dl-menthyl ester.
