REGULAR HIGH POLYMERS OF FLUORINATED STYRENES AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

A linear, head to tail, high molecular weight polymerization product of one or more fluorine nuclearly-substituted styrenes the molecular chains of which include long segments wherein all or substantially all of the asymetric carbon atoms have the same steric configuration are made by polymerizing one or more of the monomers in the presence of a catalyst obtained by reacting a compound of a metal of Group IV(A), V(A), or VI(A) of the Periodic Table with a metallo-organic compound of a metal of Group II or III of the Table. The fluorine nuclearsubstituted styrene may also be substituted by one or more methyl or ethyl groups. Specified fluorine-substituted styrenes are o-, m- and p-fluorostyrene, p-fluoro-o-methylstyrene, and p-fluoro-o-ethyl styrene. The catalyst may be a mixture of titanium and/or vanadium tetrachloride or titanium trichloride, with triethyl aluminium or a berylliumalkyl. The polymers may be moulded in articles, or extruded into fibres which may be cold-drawn.
