807,414. Vacuum apparatus for raising liquids. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 22, 1957 [Aug. 11, 1956], No. 24637/56. Class 102(2). [Also in Group XVIII] A sample of a liquid, particularly a radioactive liquid, is taken from a vented container 1 by first positioning a valve 5 so that a vacuum line 8 evacuates a vessel 4 ; moving the valve 5 to a second position in which the vacuum in the vessel 4 draws liquid along a pipe 2 and about half-way up a reservoir 3 ; moving the valve 5 so a third position in which atmospheric presture entering through a pipe 7 drives part of the liquid in the reservoir back to the container 1 through the pipe 2 and part along a pipe 9, through a sampling cavity 16 to flush it, and thence through a pipe 11 ; and finally removing a cap 15 so that the rubber cap of an evacuated sampling bottle can be pressed over a needle 14 to withdraw a sample from the cavity 16. A baffle pot 12 prevents liquid in the pipe 11 from siphoning into the reservoir 3 and a thimble 17 in the bottom of the reservoir ensures that only a very small quantity of an old sample is ever left in the apparatus. Specification 776,617 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
