[Classes 125 (ii) and 125 (iii)] Jars, bottles, tin boxes and like containers of the kind furnished with a welt, flange, bead &c. 4 providing a re-entrant portion adjacent the mouth of the body and a cap or closure 5 with a peripheral flange with a continuous or uninterrupted false wire edge 2 (as shown) or a beaded or otherwise thickened extremity, are closed hermetically by displacing at spaced intervals, portions of the lid flange in a downward and radially inward direction to engage below the flange &c. of the container. In the apparatus for effecting the closure shown in Fig. 4, plate 15 is pressed on the cap while fingers 7 bevelled at 8 are' thrust downwards to displace the flange.
