Machine for shaving and for finishing herringbone gears

A machine for lapping or shaving herringbone gears comprises a pair of tool slides 40a, 40b, each adjustable, parallel to the axis of a work support 14, 16, on a feed slide 27 movable to and from the work support on a saddle 22 traversible parallel to said axis. The work is positively rotated by a motor, and the saddle is traversed by a motor rotating a feed nut 25. The feed slide 27 may be adjusted by a hand wheel 30, and is fed intermittently at the end of each traverse of the slide 22. Hand wheels 38a, 38b rotate screws 36a, 36b to adjust main tool slides 32a, 32b on the slide 27. Hand wheels 44a, 44b adjust the tool slides 40a, 40b on the main tool slides in directions axially of the work. The tools, on angularly adjustable heads 46a, 46b, can be rotated by hand wheels 48a, 48b to assist initial meshing. Thus each tool can be used independently, or both may be used simultaneously. A modified tool head 60, Fig. 5, may be provided to shave an internal gear.
