Bands of fibres are treated by a method comprising the steps of passing the bands through a guide means which rotates or thrusts the bands and separates any bands which have run together, passing the bands into a treatment bath through the upper surface of the bath, and effecting at least two successive squeezing actions on the bands while they are immersed in the bath, whereupon the bands pass out of the bath through the upper surface of the bath. Referring to the drawings bands of fibres 8 are fed over guide roll 12 (Figs. 3 and 4) to band guide means 1, then to feed roll pair 2 and into bath 9 in which large roll 3 is partly immersed in water, while smaller rolls 4 provide two squeezing areas on roll 3 where the bands are subjected to a squeezing action. The bands 8 then leave the bath 9 to presser rolls 6, 6a via guide roll 5 and then to deflector roll 7 which prevents coil formation. The band guide means 1 comprises a staggered row of guide elements la (see Fig. 2) adjustably mounted on a retaining plate 11. Referring to Fig. 2 the bands are in the plane of the drawing and moving in the plane of the drawing from the bottom upwards. The bands contact one of the sides of the three-sided elements la and are turned over on to their sides i.e. rotated through 90 degrees so that they lie in a plane at right angles to the plane of the drawing. A modification is shown in which the large roll 3 is completely immersed and rolls 4 partly immersed and another in which the bands 8 are passed over completely immersed roll 3 and squeezed four times.
