857,974. Finishing yarns. SCRAGG & SONS Ltd., E. Sept. 11, 1959 [Nov. 25, 1958], No. 37922/58. Class 120(3). Thermoplastic yarn, which is to be crimped to impart modified stretch and bulk properties thereto, is fed by rollers into a stuffing-box crimping chamber. Yarn, in which crimp is "set" by heating in the box or subsequently, is continuously discharged from the box into, and is collected from, a circular channel at two different points between which the yarn is cooled to "fix" the crimp. The channel is formed in a drum between which and the box relative motion occurs. As shown, yarn is fed at 1 by rollers into a crimping chamber 12 formed by a metal tube one end of which directs crimped yarn into a covered channel 13 in the face of a drum 14 which is rotated, by the pressure of discharging yarn or a direct drive (not shown), against an adjustable brake 17. Heat may be adjustably applied to the tube by an electric heater 16 or to that part of the drum which receives yarn from the tube by inductive or radiant means (not shown) and the temperature may be automatically stabilised. The rollers are driven from a shaft 8 (which may serve a series of machines) through gears 4, 5 and a belt 6 which is tensioned against a driving pulley 7 by an idler pulley 9 mounted on a bell-crank lever 10 one arm of which is tensioned by a spring 11. When the yarn has travelled about 180 degrees of the path permitted by the drum, it is withdrawn by rollers, through a tensioner, at a predetermined rate and wound, Fig. 1 (not shown). The collected yarn may be further heated (to reduce stretch and enhance bulk) as by passage over or through a heated surface or tube the temperature of which is slightly higher than that used for crimping. The drum may be stationary and the rest of the crimping apparatus moved therearound.
