Food for animals contains arabitol, preferably D-arabitol, as a sweetening agent. Breads and certain types of drinks may contain as little as 0.5% by weight of arabitol, whereas 70% may be employed in jams and preserves. Other foods specified are biscuits, cakes, pastries and other confectionery, sweetmeats, chocolates, jams and other preserves, tinned fruit, portable liquids such as sweetened drinks, including low calorific alcoholic beverages.
