Formamide and N-substituted formamides are prepared by reacting a liquid mixture of ammonia or a primary or secondary amine, a small quantity of an aliphatic alcohol and a small quantity of a metal alcoholate catalyst with carbon monoxide or gases containing same in which the oxygen content does not exceed 0.01%.
