827,660. Cable joints and sleeve couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Oct. 11, 1957 [July 12, 1956], No. 21552/56. Classes 36 and 38 (1). A compound filled cable joint or sealing end for impregnated paper insulated cables is assembled with an internal heat exchanger for accelerating the cooling of the compound filling. A lead sleeved joint has a flexible pipe 19 which may be of polyvinyl chloride, or polythene, inserted during assembly of the joint through which a coolant such as liquid carbon dioxide, or nitrogen, may be passed by means of the apertures 16. The pipe may have a central straight section and two removable end-pieces and if placed outside the electric field may be of metallic material. The core joints which may be flexible have the two cable cores 3 inserted loosely in a ferrule 5, the whole being enclosed in metal braids 6 attached by binding wires 7, 8 the latter being provided with an insulating covering 9 which extends over the adjacent core 2. Each core joint is enclosed in an insulating tube 10 and in a multi-core joint the tubes are positioned and spaced by insulated spreaders 11.
