A flat floating roof 6 for liquid (e.g. petroleum) storage tanks has an expansible ring 1 slidingly engaging the tank wall 2 to effect with a flexible ring 11 a vapour seal, the force between each sector of the ring 1 and the tank wall being the horizontal component of the force transmitted by a curved slot 9 in a lip 8 attached to the roof to a pin 10 carried by lips 7 on the sector and moving freely in the slot; as this force supports the weight of the sector the sealing force is adjusted within desired limits as the pin moves in the slot to vary the direction of the resultant transmitted force. This arrangement is stated to ensure a good circumferential seal and automatic centring of the roof, the average slope of each slot should be about but not less than 45 degrees.
