Apparatus for upsetting or stretching sheet metal by pressure exerted between opposed tools 8, 9, Fig. 4, each having jaws 1, 1SP1/SP, Fig. 1, which are moved together or apart under the exerted pressure to upset or stretch the metal, the jaws are provided with a pressure plate or plates 4, 4SP1/SP of a flexible synthetic resin. Two separate plates may be used, Fig. 1, or a single slotted plate 7, Fig. 4. Various forms of slotted plate are described, Figs. 5-7 (not shown). The plates are preferably made from a laminated fibrous resin such as " Dytron " (Registered Trade Mark). Hard metals or other hard materials in powder form may be added to the resin to increase its wear quality. The jaws 1; 11 are moved by inclined blades 2 embedded in rubber 3: these blades are oppositely inclined for stretching the sheet.
