A flat roof or other plane surface of a building is covered by a sheet of flexible material, which is coated on at least one side with a thermoplastic sealing composition, by unrolling a strip of the flexible material, heating it and the surface upon which it is to be laid and pressing into position with the aid of rollers. As shown a strip of roofing felt is wound on to a roller 17 which is mounted on the frame 1 which is supported at the front by wheels 13, preferably pneumatically tyred, and a roller 23 at the rear. The surface (e.g. a flat roof) to be covered and the covering material (e.g. roofing felt) are heated by the burner tube 33 supplied with fuel from the tank 50 through pipes 51 and 37, and the roll of material is tensioned by the rollers 28 mounted on sprung arms 26. The angle of the burner jets 34 to the horizontal may be varied by means of the lever 32 operated through an eccentric 39 and handle 52 and the lever 32 is also coupled to the arm 26 so that adjustment, is automatically made as the diameter of the roll of material on roller 17 decreases. A shield 45 is brought in front of the burners once every revolution of the wheel 13 by. means of the arm 44, roller 47 and cam 46 thereby leaving strips of the sealing material unsoftened leaving transverse strips of the material not secured. Shields 36 disposed in front of the burners cause longitudinal strips not to be secured and the resultant criss-cross of unsealed portions serves for ventilation. The roller 23 at the rear of the machine presses the strip into position and is divided into sections with bevelled ends 24.
