Unspun wool or wool yarns is treated with silicon tetrachloride under substantially anhydrous conditions, that is, the wool must not contain more than 8% of water. The silicon tetrachloride may be applied in solution in trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform or perchlorethylene, mixtures thereof, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, benzine or benzene at up to 110 DEG C. and the treated material may be dried at 70 to 100 DEG C. In Example 6, wool yarn is treated with trichloroethylene and dried prior to treatment with a trichloroethylene solution of silicon tetrachloride after which is it squeezed and dried at 80 DEG C.
