In a method of cooling walls of combustion spaces or other thermally highly stressed spaces by means of a cooling medium admitted in individual jets to impinge on the outer surface of the wall, the cooling medium is admitted to the wall through nozzles arranged substantially at right angles thereto, the heated cooling medium being immediately withdrawn from the zone of the cooled wall. The cooled wall in Fig. 1 which defines a combustion space or other thermally highly stressed space, is formed of separate cooled members having independent cooling medium inlet and outlet ducts 2, 3, the medium being supplied through inlet 2 to a distribution chamber 4 from which it issues through nozzles 5 to impinge on the outer surface of the wall 1. The cooling medium is immediately discharged from the space 6 through the outlet 3. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the wall 1 is formed with pockets 7 which may be cylindrical for example, and the cooling medium nozzles 5 project into the pockets, the flow of cooling medium being as indicated by the arrows. The surface of the wall 1 on the uncooled side is covered with thermally insulating material 8. The cooling medium may be liquid or gaseous. The invention is applicable to combustion chambers of gas turbine engines, boilers and industrial furnaces &c. for example melting furnaces.
