A hand-propelled scraper-shovel (or trench digging appliance) is of the type wherein the shovel is pulled by pull cable 11 towards the winch 100 and the cable is then released so that the shovel may be retracted manually by means of handle 50, the pull cable 11 carrying internally the electric control cable 10 and the operator controlling the electromagnetic clutch 1 by push-button 16 positioned on the said handle. The improvement lies in an additional control cable 21 whereby the push-button 16 may control clutch 1 when cable 10 is broken. The normal clutch circuit includes clutch 1, direct source 5, switch 7, slip ring 9, cable 10, socket 9, switch 11 and socket 14, the return being by earth. If this circuit is broken, the operator moves over switch 7, so that connection is made by cable 21 to press-button 16, which restores the operator's control over the clutch.
