In ultrasonic sounding apparatus (particularly for fish detection) the direction of the beam axis of the transducer 2, Fig. 1 (used for both transmission and reception) is varied in bearing and in inclination by respective motors 4, 5, echoes received by receiver 3 in response to transmitted pulses from generator 1 being fed via a control device 10 to a recording stylus 21 which moves across a (moving) record medium 20 (Fig. 2) on which it records information concerning the angles of inclination and of bearing of the transducer (traces s and g respectively), together with echoes received from fish and from the sea-bottom (traces b and f respectively), the arrangement being characterized in that the speed with which the stylus (driven by motor 8) traverses medium 20 is controlled via a device (e.g. a potentiometer) 6 driven by the " inclination " motor 5 to vary proportionally to the cosine of the angle of inclination, or to this angle less an angle dependent on the divergency of the transducer beam. By this means the true depths of objects giving rise to echoes are recorded such depths being independent of the inclination of the beam to the vertical. The " inclination " trace s is produced by an electric discharge between stylus 21 and a metallized layer on the lower side of the record medium 20 at instants determined by the electrical bridging of a pair of contact elements (rotated by the " inclination " motor 5) by a conducting element rotated by the stylus motor 8 (Fig. 3, not shown), a similar arrangement being employed for the production of the bearing trace g. Instead of a single stylus 21 a plurality of styli carried by a moving support such that as one stylus completes its traversal of the recording medium a second stylus reaches the position from which traversal commences may be employed. The device 6 (Fig. 1) may additionally control the stylus motor 8 to compensate for rolling of the vessel on which the equipment is mounted. A computer comprising e.g. rotary potentiometers may be. employed for deriving the cartesian co-ordinates of the echoes for direct display.
