Improvements relating to the measurement of the linear speed of strip moving material

[Also in Group XVI] In measuring equipment wherein the linear speed of a strip 2 of moving material is obtained by measuring the output voltage of a tachogenerator coupled to a roller 1 driven by the strip, the air pressure between the roller and strip is reduced by a vacuum pump or the like (not shown) in order to increase the adhesion between the roller and the moving strip. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a fixed hollow casing 6 mounted within the roller 1 is connected to a vacuum pump and is shaped to be closely spaced from the roller over the contact region of the strip, corresponding perforations being provided respectively in the casing and roller. If desired, the upper curved wall portion of the casing 6 may be omitted. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, a fixed hollow casing 14 surrounding the roller 1 is connected to a vacuum pump and has perforations communicating with peripheral grooves in the roller 1. The arrangements are applicable to the measurement of the linear speed of metal strip during production thereof.
