862,873. Seaming non-metallic sheet materials. SMITH & NEPHEW PLASTICS Ltd. Aug. 14, 1959 [July 4,1958], No. 21570/58. Class 42(1). [Also in Group XVII] A machine for enclosing garments in film tubing (see Group XVII) comprises heat-sealing and severing means and a further severing knife carried on relatively movable frameworks. Devices for sealing and severing along the shoulder line of the garment comprise inclined heated blades 38 adjustably secured on a fixed frame 14 and masked by strips 40 carried on spring-loaded stirrups 41. The movable frame 67 carries pads 71 which press the film against the strips 40 causing the latter to retract until the blade contacts the film. The film is additionally severed transversely by a serrated blade 79 held retracted behind guard strips 77, 78 by springs 102. During final downward movement of the framework 67, levers 83 on the pivot shaft 84 of the framework engage the rear of the knife to press it against the film held between the guard strips and pads 73, 74 on the framework 67.
