An axle-box for a railway tipwaggon constructed to prevent leakage of lubricant when the waggon is tipped, or even completely turned, comprises a body 4 which is divided into a substantially toroidal shaped front portion M which is located on the poppet-head side 3 of an axle stub-shaft 2 and communicates with two pocket portions C, D forming an annular breech surrounding the stubshaft and its bearing, the position of the inner surfaces P, Q of the pockets C, D being so arranged that, irrespective of the degree of tipping of the axle box about an axis substantially coincident with the centre of the axle, these surfaces always remain above the level of oil 10 in the box. In this manner the packing seal 9 fitted to the rear portion N of the axle-box is never placed in contact with the lubricating oil. As shown in Fig. 6 the inner walls 5 of the toroidal shaped portion M are shaped to feed oil to an upper lubricating cavity 6 in a bearing- member 7 by means of a splash member, not shown.
