Prestressing wire is wound around a cylindrical container having a flanged aperture(s) in its wall, successive turns of the winding being spaced by grooved rods, lying one to each side of the aperture parallel to the container axis, the turns in the region of the aperture being diverted around the flange thereof. Wire is wound under tension around a cylindrical concrete container by a tension carriage moved therearound. The container has an aperture 1 in its cylindrical wall, a ring lining the aperture being formed with an exterior flange 18. Grooved rods 19, 20 are placed on each side of the aperture 1 being held in position by a few windings of the prestressing wire on their lower ends. The tension carriage supports a fixed pulley 21 over which wire passes to pulley 22, movable axially of the container, and thence to the container wall. In operation as the tension carriage moves around the container in the region of the aperture 1, successive turns of the winding are laid in and positioned by the grooves of the rods 19, 20 and as the carriage passes over the aperture the pulley 22 is moved, either by a hand-operated rack means 29 or by a motor, to lay the wire around and under the flange 18.
