866,593. Combine-harvesters. MASSEY-FERGUSON (UNITED KINGDOM) Ltd. June 25, 1957 [Aug. 10, 1956], No. 24516/56. Class 6(3). Relates to a combineharvester 22 which is mounted along one side of a tractor-chassis 20, the driving-wheel 21 on that side of the tractor being mounted on an axle-extension. According to the invention, the drive to the various parts of the harvester is taken from the rear power-take-off shaft, the drives to the forwardly-extending parts being taken along the outer side of the harvester via a transverse shaft 54 extending through the harvesterbody 22. The power takeoff (not shown) is connected to a pulley 25 from which a chain - drive 26 extends rearwardly to drive the straw-walkers 36, through a belt 33 and crank-shaft 35. The drive is extended to the grain-elevator 45, through a chain 42, and to a linkage 48 which reciprocates the shaker-shoe and grain-pan. The pulley 25 also drives the transverse shaft 54 through a belt 52. The shaft 54 drives a gearbox 60 (Fig. 2) having two output shafts 67, 72, from one of which a belt 76 continues the drive to a shaft 78. One drive 90 is taken from the shaft 78 to the shaker-shoe fan via the shaft 93 ; another drive is taken to the threshing-cylinder 88, and a third drive 95 is taken to a front beater 96 and thence to two feeding-drums 106, 112. The drive continues through a belt 115 to a shaft 117 driving the reciprocating cutter (not shown), grain-auger 126, and the reel 129 via further drives 123, 128, 205, 206. The entire front assembly 23 is pivoted about the shaft 97 and the reel-assembly is pivoted about a shaft 181. The drives 76, 90, 95, 103, 105, 115 are all arranged on the outer side of the harvester-body, away from the tractor driver. To provide an additional range of relative speeds for the tractor and the moving parts of the harvester, the two alternative outputshafts 67, 72 have different speeds and the pulley 75 may be moved from one to the other. The transverse shaft 54 is encased in a fixed sleeve 56 in its passage through the harvesterbody to obviate entanglement of straw. The harvester also includes a grain-unloading auger (not shown) which is driven from the pulley 25 when the remainder of the mechanism is stationary. The pulley 25 is therefore composite (Fig. 5) and includes a pulley 138 connected to the grain-auger and in permanent connection with the power take-off and a further pulley 144 driven from the first through spring-loaded pawls 152 engaging ratchets 150 on the pulley 144. The pulley 144 drives the belt 52 and carries a sprocket 147 driving the chain 26. The pulleys 138, 144 can be de-clutched by the axial movement of a ring 164 carrying the pawls 152, the ring being moved by a lever, Fig. 6 (not shown), having lost-motion. The reel 129 is carried by levers 182 pivoted on the reel-driving shaft 181 ; an adjustable bracket 197 carries intermediate sprockets 198, and enables the speed of the reel to be altered by placing alternative sprockets on the shafts 181, Fig. 8 (not shown).
