866,866. Measuring and recording aiming errors in firing practice against moving targets. ETABLISSEMENT RIWES. July 6, 1959 [July 7, 1958], No. 23122/59. Class 119. Relates to apparatus for measuring and recording aiming errors in firing practice against moving aerial targets. A target-tracking apparatus, e.g. radar 1 Fig. 1 determines the azimuth A, elevation H and distance D of a target 2, while the gun 3 has aiming elements S for azimuth and E for elevation. These values are fed into an evaluator 4 as electrical transmissions which are converted into mechanical rotations. Cams 6,7 via differentials 8, 9 supply corrections to the values A and H for target drift and firing angle to give corrected values ASP1/SP, HSP1/SP. The evaluater 4 also comprises a recorder 10 having two uniformly moving strips 11, 12 and four recording devices 13 - 16. The devices 14, 16 for the values ASP1/SP, HSP1/SP respectively of the radar apparatus 1 are shifted relatively to the devices 13, 15 for the values S, E of the gun 3 by spindles and nuts 17, 18 by an amount corresponding to the advance of the strips 11, 12 during the time T equal to the time of projectile flight to reach the target over the distance D measured by the radar 1, the time T being derived from a cam 19. The aiming error can be directly read off the recording strips. A strip bearing the records of S and ASP1/SP is shown in Fig. 2. The azimuth error Rs is indicated at any instant t. The corrections for target drift and firing angle can be applied to the aiming elements S and E of the gun 3 instead of to the values A and H of the radar 1. The apparatus can also be used to discover errors in the fire control apparatus of the gun which appear only after transmission to the gun in form of aiming errors.
