The invention comprises the compound 1,3-dichloro-imidazolidone-2; and the method of preparing compounds containing the grouping -NCI.CO.NCI- in a ring, which are soluble in aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbons, comprising suspending an appropriate compound containing the grouping -NH.CO.NH-(which is insoluble in aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbons) and an inorganic neutralising agent in an aliphatic chlorinated hydrocarbon, introducing chlorine while stirring at 0-10 DEG C., filtering off the inorganic salts formed, and recovering the desired compound by dehydrating and evaporating the solvent. The preferred neutralising agent is sodium bicarbonate and the preferred solvents are CCl4, CHCl3 and CH2Cl2. Examples prepare 1,3-dichloro-imidazolidone-2, 1,3-dichloro-5,5-diisobutyl-hydantoin, 1,3-dichloro-5-methyl-hydantoin, 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethyl-hydantoin, and 1,3-dichloro-5,5-pentamethylene-hydantoin. The products are stated to be use for treating wool to render it unshrinkable, for bleaching textile fibres other than wool, as general disinfectants, for modifying the characteristics of minerals discovered in exploratory drilling (e.g. oxidising sulphides to sulphates), and as reagents in chlorinations and oxidations.
