In a thyratron in which the discharge may be interrupted by applying a negative potential to the control grid 4, a screening electrode consisting -of at least two parts 5, 6, and the grid or a grid-holder are shaped and located so as to form gaps therebetween, at least one of which has a length d equal to or greater than width s, s being smaller than one hundred times the mean free path of a molecule of the filling gas employed. The gap is also such that the path of an electric particle passing therethrough turns through an angle greater than or equal to 90 degrees. As shown, two such gaps are provided between the screening electrode and flanges 11 secured to the grid-holder 8 but in a further embodiment the flange nearest the cathode 1 is omitted. The flanges 11 also act as cooling fins for the grid.
