A multiple spark-gap assembly for use in lightning arresters is characterized in that the electrodes 1 forming the spark gaps are cranked in forms so that each electrode forms part of two spark gaps which are in two different planes, the current flow across the spark gaps when arcs 2 are formed setting up a magnetic field H which causes the arcs 2 to move in the direction K to assist the extinction thereof. Each spark gap may be associated with an arc shoot 3 which may also be provided with an arc lengthening labyrinth. Other embodiments show assemblies where the spark gaps are spaced at 120 degrees to each other and where the ends of the electrodes forming the spark gaps are elongated and bent back upon themselves to form a U-shape. Fig. 7 shows an assembly wherein the electrodes are circular in form, the two electrodes 15, 16 being concentric. Each electrode may occupy the same position as shown in Fig. 7 or as shown in a further embodiment may occupy the outer position in one plane and the inner position in the other plane.
