A continuous kiln for annealing glassware with forced circulation of the kiln atmosphere horizontally of the core is divided into sections each comprising a fan 3 in the side wall 4, burners 6 opening into the space 15 below the ware, and ports 16, 17 connecting the space 15 with the kiln space 5. The burners may be replaced by radiant tubes disposed longitudinally or transversely of the kiln, Figs. 2, 3 and 7 (not shown), or by electric heating elements, Figs. 4 and 8 (not shown). An outlet duct 13 runs longitudinally of the kiln exhausting into a stack (not shown). Cooling sections are provided for by replacing the burners 6 by cooling valves, Figs. 5, 7 and 8 (not shown).
