PICT:0986223/C6-C7/1 A cell for electrolysing fused salts, such as NaCl, KCl, LiCl, MgCl2 or mixtures of such salts, has a molten Pb cathode 68 and a horizontal graphite anode 72 suspended by a graphite support 86 from a graphite cover 70 which is insulated from the cell body. Gas liberated at the anode is withdrawn through passageways 82, a chamber 80, and conduits 86, 84 and 88. Slight suction may be applied at 88. Gas not passing through these conduits can be withdrawn through an auxiliary outlet 90 which can be stoppered to prevent ingress of air. The cell may be heated by gas. A current density of 20 or more amps./sq.inch of anode surface may be used.
