Gas liberated at the anode is withdrawn through passageways 82, a chamber 80, and conduits 86, 84 and 88. Slight suction may be applied at 88. Gas not passing through these conduits can be withdrawn through an auxiliary outlet 90 which can be stoppered to prevent ingress of air. The cell may be heated by gas. A current density of 20 or more amps./sq.inch of anode surface may be used.
