A chicken brooder comprises a heating panel 19 detachably mounted in a wooden frame 10 which is vertically adjustable on legs 13, the space 30 above the panel being filled with heat insulating material such as wood chippings. The heater panel comprises a wooden frame traversed by several lengths of wire 23 which comprise the heating element, and: is covered on the upper side by plywood, and on the under side by a sheet 21 of rubberised textile material. The ends of the wire 23 are detachably connected to a supply panel mounted on the battery frame 10 and in the case of brooders of the battery type, a common supply panel is provided, to which each heating panel is connected.
