An optical apparatus for use in co-operation with a screen for measuring the camber, caster, and toe-in angles of a vehicle front axle and the camber and toe-in angles of a rear axle and adapted to be secured in fixed relation to a wheel on the axle is characterized in that the apparatus consists of a single unit or case supporting or enclosing a light source, an optical projection member, one or more scales and an indicator for co-operation with one or more of said scales, the arrangement being such that said indicator assumes a constant spacial orientation and is further characterized in that images of the indicator and the scale or scales are simultaneously projected on to the screen by means of the light source and the optical projection member. As shown, the apparatus comprises a lamp 3, a reflector 4, a condenser lens 5, a projection lens 6, two translucent scales 12 and 13 and an indicator 7 all mounted in a case 1 which can be secured by way of a horizontally arranged spindle 23- about which the case 1 freely pivots-on to a wheel (not shown). The indicator 7 which consists of a marking line on a translucent plate is carried by an arm 8 which is freely pivotable about a pin 10. The mark 7a (not shown) therefore assumes a vertical position. Of the two scales 12 and 13, scale 12 is stationary and scale 13 is mounted on an arm 14 pivotable about the spindle 10 under the control of a knob 17a coupled to said arm 14 by way of a shaft 17, a gear-wheel 16 and a toothed segment 15. The knob 17a may be connected to a cable for remote adjustment thereof.
