Improvements in or relating to methods and apparatus for introducing filling material into mined areas

A goaf mat 8 is fixed to a series of roof support frames 1, 2, 3, 4 so that advance of the frames towards the working face causes advance of the mat. The mat is formed in sections which are each associated with a frame and overlap slightly, one side of the frames only being attached to mat at 7, 12. A pipe 11 for supplying waste to the goaf and a conveyer 5 are also supported by the frames. After the face has been cut away the right-hand sides of frames 1, 2 are advanced towards the face, the pipe 11 is broken at 13, and the mat sections are disconnected between frames 2, 3. The left-hand sides of frames 1, 2 are then advanced and waste is supplied to the space behind the mat adjacent frames 1, 2 by the pipe. The area behind the frames 3, 4 and any other frames is filled in a similar manner. The modification shown in Figs. 6, 8 is adapted for use in sloping seams, the frame 1SP1/SP being installed at the lowest part of the seam. After the face has been cut by an excavator 5SP1/SP the left-hand sides of the frames 1SP1/SP, 2SP1/SP are advanced together with the associated parts of the mat 11SP1/SP. After the space vacated by the parts of the mat is filled with waste falling under gravity, the right-hand sides of the frames 1SP1/SP, 2SP1/SP are advanced. The frames 3SP1/SP, 4SP1/SP are then advanced and additional waste is supplied to the space behind the mat in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 6).
