A rope dynamometer for hoisting installations in mine shafts comprises a measuring element for laterally deflecting a gauge length of the rope, which element is arranged to measure the rope loading only when the rope is non-moving and to remain in a disengaged position during a hoisting movement of the undeflected rope. When the piston 12 of a motor 11, which normally holds a deflecting shoe 1 off the rope 2 of a hoisting engine, allows a weight 9 to apply the shoe to the rope, a pointer 14 indicates on a scale 15 the deflection of the rope between sheaves 16 and 17, which deflection is a measure of the rope loading; and, at the same time, a switch 13 in the circuit-releasing the lock of the hoisting engine is opened, so that the engine, which has been stopped for this measurement, cannot be accidentally re-started. The measurement may be taken instead on the other run 2SP1/SP of the rope. Abutments 19 at the ends of a spring 18 are applied by means of a screw 20 and deflect the rope into contact with a stationary counterabutment 21. The rope loading is deduced from the spring deflection, indicated on a scale 22, in conjunction with the deflection 24 of the rope, indicated by a device 23. The spring 18 may be replaced by a rigid bar 18SP1/SP bearing abutments 19 and moving with a piston-rod 26SP1/SP, whilst the counter-abutment 1 is carried by the coacting cylinder 25, which is free to slide longitudinally, so that abutments and counter-abutment move in opposite directions, to deflect or release the rope, as fluid is admitted through port 31 or 30. In a multi-fall hoist, a device is provided for each rope, the conduits 30, 31 supplying the individual cylinders in turn, through a valve station. The abutments 19 may be replaced by two rollers 37, permanently engaged with the rope, a single-acting motor, operated by a pump 34, applying the shoe 1 and a spring 38 returning it.
