In response to mine hosting system accidents, regulatory agencies have issued mandates and policy directives requiring supplemental ascending overspeed protection. These regulatory initiatives have influenced the development of auxiliary emergency braking systems. Attention has been focused primarily on elevators which are equipped with multiple ropes. The paper discusses the application of a suspension rope brake to a single rope mine hoist. Technical challenges associated with accelerated rope brake lining wear and suspension rope lubrication are addressed.
