904,788. Aircraft framework. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. April 13, 1961 [April 21, 1960], No. 14001/60. Class 4. In a jet deflecting flap for a jet flap aircraft, the flap upper surface comprises a panel which is secured to inner supporting structure by means permitting free expansion of the panel both chordwise and spanwise. Figs 2 and 3 are chordwise sectional views on lines II-II and III-III respectively of Fig. 1, which is a plan view of a flap, whose upper surface consists of two panels 23a, 23b. The exhaust gases from a plurality of jet propulsion engines are discharged rearwardly from nozzles, such as 2, as a thin sheet over the upper surface of the trailing edge wing flap 3, mounted on a spanwise extending tube 11 and pivotable about an axle 12 by means of a jack 14 connected to tube 11 by a lever 13. Rigidly attached to tube 11 at each of stations A, B 1 and B 2 are channelsection arms 15, 16, 17 which support a chordwise extending channel-section former 18 by, respectively, a link 19 secured to arm 15 at one end and by a bolt free to slide in a slot 21 at the other end, a pivotal connection and a link 20 pivoted at its ends. At each of the intermediate stations C 1 , C 2 , further channelsection arms 16a, 17a, attached to tube 11 support a channel-section former 18a in a similar manner to that used in supporting formers 18. Skin 22 forming the flap lower surface is rigidly secured to arms 15, 17 and 17a. Panels 23a, 23b are attached to formers 18a at stations C 1 and C 2 only by spot welding at 26 and by rivets at 27, which latter also secure a strip 29 extending over a slit 28 in the panels. At station A, the edges of panels 23a, 23b, fit freely between formers 18 and cover strip 30, which is rigidly secured to former 18 but is spaced therefrom by washers of slightly greater thickness than the panels. A gap between the panels and the washers allows for spanwise expansion. At stations B 1 and B 2 , the panels fit freely between formers 18 and cover strips 33, which are secured to the formers but are spaced therefrom by end caps 32 of slightly greater thickness than the panels. At the flap leading edge, the panels and strips 29, 30 are wrapped around two rods 34 and three tubes (not shown) the two rods 34 being secured at their mid-points to formers 18a while their ends engage freely in the tubes which are secured to formers 18 at stations A, B 1 and B 2 . Spanwise-extending stiffeners 36 secured to the rearwards parts of the panels are connected to formers 18 by brackets which allow for relative expansion of the formers and stiffeners. Gaps 24, 25 permit cooling air to flow through the interior of the flap. Specifications 787,012 and 829,753 are referred to.
