Method of preparation of a cross-linked polyethylene, or grafted by reaction of a polyethylene with a hydroxylated isocyanate

Hydroxylated polyethylene is prepared by (1) reacting polyethylene containing at least 0.05% wt. carbonyl groups based on the wt. of polyethylene with a metal alkoxide of formula M(OR)y-zXz where M is aluminium or titanium, R is an alkyl group containing 1-8 C atoms, X is a halogen, hydrogen or alkyl group containing 1-8 C atoms, y is equal to the valency of M and z is from O to y-1; (2) reacting the product with water. Exemplified compounds for (1) are aluminium isopropoxide and tetraisopropyl titanate. The hydroxyl group containing polyethylene may be crosslinked using isocyanates.
