Improvements in or relating to coating and joint sealer compositions containing a coal tar and a poly-epoxy-alkoxy aryl resin

A coating or joint-sealer composition comprises (i) a coal tar, (ii) an epoxy curing agent, and (iii) a poly epoxy-alkoxy aryl resin derived from a phenol and an aldehyde or ketone and of the formula FORM:0910961/IV(a)/1 where R and R11 are any of H, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, cycloalkyl or furyl, or together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a cycloalkylidene group; X and Y are any of H, OH, halogen or alkyl; R1 is H, halogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or cycloalkyl; m is an integer sF 3; Z is H or epoxyalkyl; there being sP 3 epoxyalkyl groups per average molecule. Compounds specified are (i) crude tar, road tar, coke oven heavy oil topped tar, coal tar pitch, coal digestion pitch, and creosote; (ii) various organic N-containing compounds and polyamides; (iii) long lists of suitable phenols, aldehydes, ketones and epihalohydrins are given. Optional additives include (a) Solvents: methyl ethyl or isobutyl ketones, butyl acetate, coal tar naphtha, benzene, toluene, xylene; (b) Fillers: mica, asbestos, talc, glass, slate, clay, alumina, carborundum, silica; (c) Elastomers and plasticizers: polyvinyl acetate, polyalkylene polysulphides, butadiene-styrene or-acrylonitrile copolymers, PVC, vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymers, polyvinyl acetals, polyvinyl alcohol, natural and synthetic rubbers, nylon and other polyamides.
