A shock absorber for use in domestic plumbing systems and the like for reduction of shock waves, comprises a resiliently distendable thimble tube member 10 having its open end sealed to a correspondingly shaped rigid outer casing 17 which has a wall 20 spaced a substantial distance from the resilient member to permit limited distention thereof, the open end of the casing having a closure 25 and a junction member 32 having an opening in registration with the open end of the resilient member for attachment to the plumbing system. The resilient thimble tube is thickened at zones 15, 16. A slightly-tapered space 30 between the closure 25 and the casing and also a retaining flange 14 of the resilient member may be sealed by an adhesive. The closure is retained by peening of the casing at 31. It is stated that the apparatus may be designed to respond in tune with the pressure waves or surges.
