A device for measuring the distance between the centres of two circular holes, e.g. in a workpiece, comprises two relatively displaceable sensing members, such as 4, 5 for insertion in the holes, each member having two spaced reference points lying on a line parallel to a measuring axis for contacting the wall of the bore, and means for indicating the relative displacement along the measuring axis. The sensing members, which may be of different sizes, may be of circular section as shown in Fig. 2, with reference points in the form of balls 7SP1/SP, 7SP11/SP so disposed that lines passing through their centres to the axis 2SP1/SP of the bore form angles of 150 and 30 degrees respectively with the measuring axis 6. Alternatively, the reference points may be cones or may be the natural contact points of prismatic sensing members (Fig. 1, not shown). In Fig. 3, the member 5 is detachably secured in a body 10 having a recess in which a carrier 12 for member 4 is slidably mounted, displacement of the carrier and member 4 being transmitted by rods 8 and 14 to a dial gauge 9.
