Apparatus for planting geophysical prospecting means 8 in a hole in the earth comprises a jet pipe 1 having a space for reception of the prospecting means, a retaining member 13 for locking the prospecting means in the space, a nozzle passage 10 surrounding the means and from which fluid issues to form the hole, and means for ejecting the prospecting means out of the pipe into the hole. The means 8 is a seismometer which is centred by ribs 9 on the pipe, one rib housing the seismometer cable 12. Sleeves 2, 17 are axially slidable in the pipe, the sleeve 2 normally covering a hole 16 in the pipe. Guides 5, 14 are respectively fixed to the pipe and the sleeve 2 adjacent the end of the pipe to which a fluid supply hose is attached. The apparatus is held vertically above the earth and fluid is supplied to form the hole by jetting, the apparatus being lowered as the hole is formed until the seismometer is ejected and the apparatus is withdrawn. A ball 7 introduced into the fluid supply is directed by the guide 14 to close the end of the sleeve 2 so that the fluid forces the sleeves downwardly to eject the seismometer after shearing the locking pin 13, the ball being finally directed by the guide 5 through the hole 16. In a modified apparatus a wall is formed between the pipe and seismometer to form the nozzle passage. The means 8 may be an explosive charge.
