927,983. Number-printing apparatus. CREED & CO. Ltd. March 2, 1962, No. 8161/62. Class100 (2). Apparatus for printing numbers on data bearing media such as perforated tapes used in data processing systems and teleprinters comprises a plurality of type wheels 1 arranged in a row, means for setting one or more of the wheels to positions indicative of a number to be printed, a hammer 22 for striking a tape T in such a manner as to move it towards the wheels 1, an inking tape or ribbon 21 disposed between the tape T and the wheels 1, a solenoid 31 for operating the type-wheel setting means and said hammer, and a latch 13 for retaining the hammer in an inoperative position until the type-wheels have been set. On energization of the solenoid 31a plunger 30 and a link 18 are drawn downwardly and an operating arm 9 is caused to pivot in an anticlockwise direction about spindle 7 against a spring 19, the hammer 22 mounted in a spring blade 10 being held stationary by the latch 13 which engages the end of the hammer stock 8. The movement of the arm 9 causes an increase in the tension in a spring 12 and causes an operating bar 6 to pivot a pawl-arm 5 in a clockwise direction about the axis 3 of the wheels 1 so as to effect movement of the respective type wheel through one digit position. Each wheel 1 is associated with a ratchet-wheel 4 having a co-operating pawl 17 mounted on a pawl arm 5. Further movement of the arm 9 causes a pin 15 mounted thereon to engage the latch 13 which is thereby disengaged from the hammer stock which pivots about axis 7 under the action of the spring 12 until an adjustable screw 11 engages the arm 9. The inertia of the head 22 causes it to strike the tape T which is forced down against the ribbon 21 and the wheels 1 to effect printing.
