Use of salts of the mixtures containing triethanolamine as inhibitor in a corrosive effect acting on the basis of iron and copper (

A composition having lubricating and corrosion preventive properties comprises a trialkanolamine salt of an organic acid and a polyglycol ester of an organic acid, the acid in each case having a molecular weight not less than that of lauric acid. The organic acids may be saturated or unsaturated fatty acids or rosin acids or mixtures of these. The polyglycol is preferably polyethylene glycol. The composition may also contain ammonium and/or alkali metal salts of the organic acids, as well as unreacted acids and/or fats and excess trialkanolamine. Sulphur, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole or its sodium salt, and organic sulphides (e.g. diethyl sulphide or di-hydroxyethyl sulphide) may also be added. The composition may be added to water, surface-active agents, oils, waxes, lubricants (especially petroleum lubricants), boring oils and coolants (e.g. glycol or methylated spirits). In the examples, compositions are described consisting of (1) triethanolamine salts of refined tall oil fatty acids and of woolfat fatty acids and polyglycol ester of refined tall oil fatty acid, (2) triethanolamine salt of beeswax fatty acids, polyglycol ester of abietic acid and potassium salt of abietic acid, and (3) triethanolamine salt of woolfat fatty acids, polyglycol ester of polymerized abietic acids and potassium salt of polymerized abietic acid. Examples of the preparation of suitable compositions are also given.
