In a brake mechanism for a double tyred wheel of a motor vehicle two brake drums 6, 7 are disposed side by side and are fastened together on a flange ring 4 of the wheel hub 5 directly on the inside of the wheel of the vehicle. Brake shoes 9 mounted on a rigid cross member 13 engage a brake drum 6 secured to the flange ring 4 when actuated by a cam member 17 rotated by a brake shaft 15 and a lever 16. Brake shoes 8, mounted on a second rigid cross member 18, engage a brake drum 7 secured to a flange ring 4 when actuated by a cam member 21 rotated by a brake shaft 20 and a lever 22. The brake 6, 9 may be operated by the hand brake lever mechanism and the brake 7, 8 may be operated as the main brake by a pressure medium.
