A stainless steel alloy has the following composition: TABS:0947798/C3/1 with the balance Fe and incidental impurities, the austenite formers C and Ni and ferrite formers Cr, Mo, Si, Al, and V and/or the other strong carbide formers being balanced so that the alloy transforms from austenite to martensite at below -50 DEG F. after austenitizing, e.g. by heating at 1950-2050 DEG F. and air cooling, and conditioning, e.g. reheating at 1750-1850 DEG F.; thereafter the alloy may be aged at above 800 DEG F. Numerous examples of alloys are disclosed including some similar to those of the invention but containing low contents of Ni, Al, e.g. an alloy containing 5.23% Ni and 0.55% Al, high contents of Cr, e.g. 16.7%, or a low carbon content, e.g. 0.092% C.
