A bed of material forming the floor of a brooder is heated by a heating element contained in a rigid U-shaped tube of porcelain or non-fibrous glass buried in the material with its ends accessible without disturbing the bed. Glass U-tubes 5C and C for " off-peak " and " tapping-up " heating respectively, are buried in the concrete or sand bed 7 with their ends projecting into bus-bar chamber 8, whereby the elements may readily be replaced. Bed 7 is surrounded by asbestos or glass wool, or nylon, thermal insulating slabs 12 enclosed within polythene sheets 13A, 13B, and the brooder canopy 14 is of adjustable height. Element 6 may be thermostatically controlled.
