A combined storage and instantaneous electrical water heater comprises a container 1 enclosing basic heating elements 3 controlled by a temperature-operated switch 7-9, 14, and a second set of elements 4 controlled by a differential pressure-operated switch 16-22 operating at a determined water flow, one side of which is connected to an orifice 23 which may be positioned in either the inlet or outlet pipes, or a separate outlet pipe to cater for heavy water demands. In this case the pipe serving the remainder of the outlets may have a restriction to limit the flow. A number of arrangements are described for operating the pressure-operated switch. The total heating capacity of the two elements may be between 18 and 21 kilowatts. A thermal cut-out may be connected in series with the second set of elements.
