Improvements in or relating to the treatment of molten steel in vacuum degasification

P1 A method of adding deoxidizing agents and/or alloying elements to molten steel in a vacuum degassing process comprises placing the additions in a tube which is held in a position outside the melt by a device which is rendered inoperative when immersed in the melt and subsequently lowering the tube into the melt. As shown, a tube 5 supported by a piston 7 and a wire 10 in a casing 4 attached to a vacuum vessel 1 is filled with the desired additions. Compressed air may be supplied above the piston 7 and a hand winch 11 provided to lower the tube 5 into the melt in a position the intake pipe 2 of the vacuum chamber, the wire 10 is rapidly melted and the compressed air quickly moves the tube into the desired position.
