In the sealing together of a pair of members 30, 32 for supporting metallic elements 36, 38 to be protected for oxidation, one of the members 30 or 32 consisting of a glass or ceramic material and the other 32 or 30 of glass, ceramic or metal, the sealing surface 31, 33 of at least one of the members 30, 32 is coated with a powdered solder glass 151 suspended in a liquid PICT:0967387/C1/1 vehicle, the liquid vehicle removed prior to introducing the elements 36, 38 by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere below the flow point of the solder glass, the solder glass heated to just below the flow point to cause the formation of a continuous layer of the solder glass, the metallic elements 36, 38 introduced, the sealing surfaces 31, 33 placed in sealing relation and a permanent seal formed between the members 30, 32 by heating in an inert atmosphere. The members 30, 32 shown form an electron discharge device and are of devitrified glass. The solder glass is also a devitrifiable glass and the sealed-in portion of the elements 36, 38 are of tungsten. Specifications 809,017, 903,706 and 967,388 are referred to.
