In a hay baler, having a bale thrower 30, the bales are moved through the bale chamber and are guided, by side walls 20 and an adjustable arcuate guide 21, along the arcuate bale chamber floor into contact with bale thrower fingers 33, which are then forwarded along with the bale. The fingers are carried by an endless chain 43 which is mounted upon sprockets 44, 45, and which is connected by a rigid member 31 and a flexible member 32, to a fixed spring 26, so that when the fingers are forwarded by the bale the member 31 is moved against the action of the spring, to the top dead centre position shown in Fig. 5c. Further movement of the fingers causes the member 31 to pass the top dead centre position whence it is quickly returned under the action of the spring to the bottom dead centre position, shown in Fig. 3, thus quickly accelerating the fingers and hurling the bale upwardly and rearwardly into a trailer or the like.
