A steel plate is coated with a composition which comprises a copolymer having a chemically heterogeneous composition obtained by copolymerizing two or more monomers, the second order transition temperatures of which differ by at least 20 DEG C. Copolymers exemplified are copolymers of vinyl acetate and dibutyl maleate and of vinyl chloride and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, which copolymers may be plasticized with dibutyl phthalate. The compositions may be filled with 60% by weight of expanded mica; silica, wood or cork dust and carbon may also be used. The compositions are applied as aqueous dispersions.
